Archive #23/65: Swimming Pool, 1966

The Mahora School Baths was the venue for the first Swimming Sports in 1953.

Swimming was a popular sport and in 1961, two Seniors, G.L Malaghan and R.A. Powell led a fundraising campaign for a new swimming pool. The Parents’ Association backed up the efforts and initiative displayed by the boys of the College, by seeking out, or organising jobs that the boys could do to further the Fund.

In true community spirit, to expedite the construction of the Swimming Pool, the ten members of the Parents’ Association each guaranteed fifty pounds to the Bank, so that the College could get the job started. Thanks to those generous parents, the excavation of the 25x10 metre hole began and the pool was opened in time for the beginning of the 1966 School year.

When the first swimmer dived into the new Swimming Pool, it symbolised the spirit of the Lindisfarne community, that was so prevalent at the time. The completion of this major and vital amenity was, ultimately achieved through the combined effort and initiative of boys, parents, grandparents, Staff, Old Boys and friends of the College.

The experience of being able to hold the Swimming Sports on the grounds, in the College’s own Baths, was a long awaited and greatly appreciated event.
