Lindisfarne College Old Boy and 2023 Dux, Leo Guo (2017–2025), has just completed an exciting six-week research internship at Zhejiang University in China as part of the prestigious Global Research Immersion Program for Young Scientists (GRIPS).
Working alongside fellow researcher Helen Fan in Dr. Bruce Yu’s lab, Leo explored how deep learning models can be efficiently adapted for specialised tasks. Their work focused on parameter-efficient transfer learning (PETL) techniques in video transformer models, an area gaining rapid momentum in the fields of computer vision and artificial intelligence.
Throughout the internship, Leo gained valuable hands-on experience training large models using the lab’s GPU cluster, analysing transformer architectures, and immersing himself in advanced research. “After reading countless papers and working through real-world applications, I’ve developed a real passion for PETL,” says Leo.
Beyond the lab, the program also included industry visits and cultural experiences, plus, as Leo put it, “a lot of amazing food!”
Leo extended his gratitude to GRIPS for their generous support, his supervisors for their guidance, and the incredible network of young scientists he has met along the way.
From Dux of Lindisfarne to the forefront of global research, Leo Guo continues to represent the College with excellence, curiosity, and ambition.
