Mr Stuart Hakeney: Rector 2020-2025

Mr Stuart Hakeney joined Lindisfarne College as Rector in late 2020, arriving at a time of significant challenge and change. The College was navigating the ongoing effects of Covid-19 while undertaking an extensive building programme. From the outset, Mr Hakeney brought energy, optimism, and a deep commitment to boys’ education. His calm and steady leadership quickly provided reassurance for students, staff, and families during a period of uncertainty.

A defining feature of Mr Hakeney’s leadership was his focus on relationships. He made it a priority to know every boy as an individual and worked hard to build meaningful connections with families, staff, Old Boys, and the wider community. Visible across all areas of College life, he was a regular presence at sporting fixtures, cultural events, boarding activities, and community gatherings. His approachable nature, humour, and genuine interest in people helped strengthen the sense of connection that is central to Lindisfarne College.

One of the most significant achievements of Mr Hakeney’s tenure was the development of The Lindisfarne Way and a refreshed set of organisational values. Through a collaborative process involving staff, students, parents, Old Boys, and supporters, the College community clarified its vision for educating young men and through Mr Hakeney’s leadership, this vision was actively embedded throughout school life.  Mr Hakeney also placed a strong emphasis on standards and personal responsibility. He believed that attention to detail in the small things, such as presentation, uniform, and personal conduct, created the foundation for success in larger endeavours.

His five years as Rector included some extraordinary challenges. He successfully guided the College through the continued impacts of Covid-19 and the disruption caused by Cyclone Gabrielle. Throughout these events, he led with composure, resilience, and integrity, ensuring the wellbeing of students and staff remained a priority while maintaining the continuity of College life.Mr Hakeney also oversaw the restoration and renovation of the College’s iconic Homestead building. Undertaken to meet earthquake safety requirements, the project balanced heritage preservation with modern functionality, ensuring this important landmark remains a central part of Lindisfarne College life for future generations.

he relationship between Lindisfarne and its Old Boys strengthened considerably during Mr Hakeney’s tenure. He embraced opportunities to connect with former students through reunions, regional gatherings, dinners, and community events. Parents also appreciated his commitment to open communication and partnership, recognising his genuine care for their sons. Students remember Mr Hakeney as a leader who lived the values he promoted. Whether singing at assemblies, playing his bass ukulele at school events, or cheering from the sidelines at sporting fixtures, he led by example. His enthusiasm, energy, and commitment to young people earned him deep respect and affection throughout the College community.

Mr Hakeney’s legacy is one of connection, high standards, and service. Through challenging times and exciting opportunities, he strengthened relationships, embedded a shared vision through The Lindisfarne Way, and ensured that the wellbeing and success of Lindisfarne boys remained at the heart of every decision.
