Old Boy Matt Taylor wins gold medal in the New Zealand Men’s 3000m race

Matt Taylor (Lindisfarne Old Boy 2007 -2012) won a gold medal in the New Zealand Men’s 3000m race at the Potts Classic Track and Field meeting earlier this year.

Matt, who is an accomplished athlete, held numerous athletics and cross country titles while at Lindisfarne and went on to achieve even greater accolades after school, including bronze medals in the 2019 and 2018 New Zealand 1500m men’s event.

In 2019 he was selected as one of nine athletes to compete in the Pacific games in Apia – the first time a New Zealand team had been invited to this multi-sport event. In a 2018 interview, Mat attributed a lot of his success to Lindisfarne teachers , Murray Smith and Darren Brown who, he said, gave him a sense of balance in his training and never discouraged him from playing other sports like rugby. Matt believes that it was at Lindisfarne that his potential in his sport was first recognised and developed.
