Many Lindisfarne boys, past and present, will remember the great fun they had taking part in musicals over the years. For this reason, we thought it would be interesting to look back at musicals from the 80’s and 90’s and record some of the highlights.
1983: The Pirates of Penzance
Very little seems to be recorded about this rendition of Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta apart from the fact that it featured Guy Horne (later to be Head of School), Grant Kidd and Matthew McNutt and that, according to the Chronicle of that year, rehearsals often didn’t always go as expected!
1986: Oh, What a lovely War!
This musical production played to packed audiences on both nights that it was performed but sadly no photographs of the production seem to exist. If any Old Boys have any, perhaps they could send them to the College. Some of the boys who got particular mentions for strong performances are Peter Samuels, Guy Horne, Jody Jowsey, Spadie Nuku, Edwin Duley, David McLeod and Tom Klingender.
1987: Starblaze with Iona College
This production boasted an impressively large cast which again featured Lindisfarne stalwarts such as Jody Jowsey, Edwin Duley and Tim Klingender.
1989: Time and Time Again with Woodford College
Another very large cast was involved in this production about a student who accidentally travels back in time. A review in The Chronicle gave a favourable mention to Mark Austin (the young time-traveller), Brad McCoubrie, Julian Smith and Matthew Thompson as the leader of the “Wild Ones” a leather-jacketed group of rebels. The exuberance of the rock and roll dancers was also impressive.
